Klara Polgar is the mother of the Chess Grandmasters and champions Polgar sisters. She was born on May 13, 1946 in the Soviet Union, Ukraine. She was a teacher of foreign languages, she spoke 7 languages. She answered Laszlo Polgar’s ad in a newspaper about potential marriage for a special purpose. They met in Budapest in 1965, and as they had dinner, they were discussing Laszlo’s idea on how to raise children to become geniuses. It was a strange idea for her, she thought he was crazy. After a (very) long walk Laszlo persuaded her and she agreed to come to live in Hungary and marry Laszlo. So her last name changed form Klara Altberger to Klara Polgar.

They worked, they lived in a modest, cramped apartment in a communist-era high rise building downtown Budapest.

Their first daughter, Susan Polgar (Polgar Zsuzsanna) was born on April 19, 1969.

Their second daughter, Sofia Polgar (Polgar Zsofia) was born on November 2, 1974. The age gap was really advantageous because it gave them time to introduce Susan to languages 1t age 3 and chess at age 4.

Their third daughter was born on July 23. 1976.

Klara taught their children languages, Hungarian, Russian, Esperanto, German, English and others.

She and her husband live in Miami, Florida, they have homes in Budapest and in Israel as well.
